Two Countries, One Forest – Appalachian Atlas
Two Countries, One Forest (2C1Forest) is a major Canadian-U.S. collaborative of conservation organizations, researchers, foundations and conservation-minded individuals focused on protection, conservation and restoration of forests and natural heritage from New York to Nova Scotia, across the Northern Appalachian/Acadian ecoregion.
2C1Forest identified the need for an interactive atlas to provide transboundary environmental information to land owners, land managers, landuse planners, and conservation and community groups in the region to support sustainable landuse and conservation planning.
After assessing a number of potential solutions, 2C1Forest selected DMSG to develop the envisioned atlas on top of the company’s MapSherpa Web Mapping Platform. This custom atlas was to be designed to fit seamlessly with the existing 2C1Forest website and provide a rich user experience for supporting many diverse decision-making and information-gathering requirements across the geographic region.
By working with DMSG, 2C1Forest benefited from the company’s combined focus on software development for the underlying platform, and consulting services for implementation of a custom solution that met the specific needs of the envisioned atlas.
The application is hosted today by DMSG on behalf of 2C1Forest and benefits from ongoing development of the underlying technology in sync with the evolution of web browsers and modern AJAX capabilities.
